Thomas Hope: Drawings of Ottoman Istanbul

Thomas Hope: Drawings of Ottoman Istanbul
The works presented in this volume were created by the British artist Thomas Hope, who was not only an exceptionally talented draftsman and designer, but also one of the nineteenth century’s most important collectors of antiquities and connoisseur of the artistic tradition of the ancient civilizations of Greece and the Mediterranean.

The works come from the Archive of Hope’s personal Drawings, which the international scholarly community considered lost, when it had in fact been purchased by Antonis Benakis, founder of the Benaki Museum, and kept – as Fani-Maria Tsigakou eloquently describes – in the Museum Library. The present publication, by the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, as well as the accompanying exhibition, represent a particularly happy coincidence, because they capture certain basic characteristics of the Benaki Museum founder’s aim especially in the promotion of cross-cultural dialogue.
