“Currency in Mileiha”

“Currency in Mileiha”

Published in 2017 by the Sharjah Museum of Archeology, this book examines the historical origins of money in the world and its prevalence, replacing bartering— the only way to exchange merchandise in the past until currency coinage in 7 B.C in Lydia, currently in Western Turkey.

The book reviews how money was introduced to the Arabian Peninsula, and how its centers of trade started to produce money, including Maliha’s coinage of its own local currency in Sharjah emulating that of Alexander the Great. The book details some of the most important symbols and imagery found on Maliha’s currency and their significance. It continues to fully review the coins on display at the Sharjah Museum of Archeology with details on weight, material, and origin.
