His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, erected this building as a tribute to those who suffered and died defending Khor Fakkan against the Portuguese invasion of 1507. Whereas other towns immediately surrendered, the brave people of Khor Fakkan resisted for two days before being overcome. The monument, which resembles a warrior›s helmet, provides an inspiring space to learn, reflect and honour.
Why visit the Museum?
Here you can explore the monument and contemplate the sacrifices the people of Khorfakkan made defending their town and way of life.
Discover this remarkable Resistance Monument that humbly pays respect to the people of Khorfakkan who bravely resisted the Portuguese invasion of 1507.
In 1507, the town of Khorfakkan was an important trade centre. Ships travelling in the region frequently stopped at its port. Shops were situated close to the coastline for ease of access.
Residents used nearby materials to construct buildings. As such, some structures were made from palm fronds, and others from coral and mountain stones. Khor Fakkan was protected by a -1.5metre thick defensive wall. It ran parallel to the mountains and stretched east towards the sea. To further protect the town borders, residents erected towers along the hills and mountain ridges and constructed forts along the coast.
